COLUMBUS, OH- This past week, December 7-10, the Baylor Swim Club competed in the 2016 USA Swimming Speedo Winter Junior Championships- EAST at the McCorkle Aquatics Pavilion on the campus of the Ohio State University. This is one of the the top swimming competitions in the country on an annual basis for swimmers eighteen years old and under. There were over 800 swimmers in the meet representing over 150 clubs from all over the eastern half of the country. The Baylor Swim Club ended up finishing 8th in the boys overall team standings.
Once again leading the way for Baylor was the sixteen year old junior, Trey Freeman. He swam to a first place finish in 1650 yard freestyle, and took second in the 500 yard freestyle. His time of 14:59.3 in the 1650 freestyle broke the team record of former NCAA and US OPEN champion Martin Grodzki, which was set back in 2008. Freeman also claimed the 3rd fastest 16 year old time ever in the 500 yard freestyle. He joins Sam McHugh in the Baylor School 4:16 club. The Baylor School is the only high school in the country to have such a club! Freeman also set new Southeastern Swimming 15-16 LSC records in the 200, 500, and 1650 yard freestyle.
The Baylor Swim Club 4x50 yard freestyle relay of Trey Freeman, Jack Best, Gershwin Greene, and Peter Lochmaier swam to a third place finish in the event. This relay broke the Baylor School record, and posted a time of 1:21.99! The prior record was held by Baylor greats Luke Kaliszak, Sam McHugh, Chandler Hinson, and Christian Selby in 2014. The quartet of Trey Freeman, Matthew Boyer, Jack Best, and Gershwin Greene swam to a 6th place finish in the 4x100 yard freestyle relay. Their time of 3:01.15 is also a new school record. The previous record was set in 2014 by Luke Kaliszak, Chandler Hinson, Will Raines, and Sam McHugh.
Baylor Senior Peter Lochmaier also had an outstanding meet. Lochmaier swam to a new personal best time and an eighth place finish in the 200 yard butterfly. This was Peter's first swim in an A Final at a Junior National competition.
Overall Baylor Swim Club athletes had 15 swims that moved up in the Baylor School top 20 times list.
Congratulations to Zach Althoff, Jack Best, Matthew Boyer, Trey Freeman, Jason Green, Gershwin Greene, Jack Kirby, Peter Lochmaier, and Louis Sebastian Weekes for there hard work and performance at this high level national swim meet.
