Baylor Claims Combined, Boys TISCA State Championships

KNOXVILLE, TN- On Friday and Saturday, February 10-11 the Baylor School has claimed the combined and boys TISCA State Swimming & Diving Championships. This is the twelfth year in a row that the Baylor School has won the combined team title, while the boys have taken the title four times out of the last five years. The overall depth of the boys team was enough to outlast 2016 champion Memphis University School. The Baylor School girls finished third overall behind Harpeth Hall and Hardin Valley Academy.

Leading the way for Baylor were some fantastic relay swims. The boys took the title in both the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay. The quartet of Trey Freeman, Gershwin Greene, Matthew Boyer, and Jack Best swam to an automatic all-american time of 1:23.03. The 400 yard free relay of Trey Freeman, Zach Althoff, Peter Lochmaier, and Jack Kirby also claimed automatic all-american status. Trey Freeman's lead off times in the 200 free relay, and 400 free relay were new TISCA State record swims. His time of 20.21 in the 50 freestyle eclipsed the record that was set back in 2015, while the his time of 44.24 in the 100 free broke the record set by Joshua Walsh in the individual 100 free that was swum that evening.

Trey Freeman continued his dominance in the meet by winning the 500 yard freestyle with an all-american time of 4:23.89. Teammate Peter Lochmaier took second with an all-american consideration time of 4:31.93. Seniors Matthew Boyer and Zach Althoff were a big contributors to the championship. Boyer finished third in the 100 yard free in all-american consideration fashion, while Althoff claimed third in the 100 yard backstroke in an automatic all-american time of 49.45.

The young group of Baylor School girls certainly did not disappoint. The 200 freestyle relay squad of Avery Wilson, Addison Smith, Jamee Mitchum, and Jewel Gordon claimed second in the event. Their time of 1:35.89 is also a new all-american consideration time. The Baylor School girls also had some big time production from the 1 meter diving competition. Elodie Nix took fourth, Sarah Miller finished 5th, and Olivia Bettis rounded out the scoring in tenth place.

The swim of the meet on Friday evening was Trey Freeman in the 200 yard freestyle. Freeman's time of 1:34.92 is a new TISCA State Record. Trey broke his own state record from last year by two seconds. The boys 200 yard medley relay of Zach Althoff, Matthew Boyer, Peter Lochmaier, and Gershwin Greene finished second with an automatic high school all-american time of 1:31.33. The Baylor School girls 200 yard medley relay of Jamee Mitchum, Addison Smith, Sam Suer, and Jewel Gordon finished sixth overall in the event.
